MEANING OF URBI ET ORBI
Urbi et Orbi is a Latin phrase meaning “In the city (of Rome) and to the world” (literally: Urbe and Orbe). Nowadays this formula is used in the papal bulls and other papal documents, messages or direct blessings to the whole world. In everyday speech Urbi et Orbi can be used jokingly to denote something said or published to the four winds, making everyone know.
THE IMPARTING OF THE BLESSING
Urbi et Orbi blessing is the first made by a pope at the time of his election to the papacy. It is also spread by the Pope at Christmas and Easter, the crowd gathered in St. Peter’s Square and on special occasions. The blessing involves the absolution of all sins for all time those present in St. Peter’s Square and to those who receive it to through the various media.
